When this game was initially revealed I had my doubts. No involvement from the original creators, limited DS graphic capabilities, chibiterasu....I must say I was much less elated than I should have been for an Okami sequel.

But this new trailer shows that perhaps the prognosis is not as bleak as some may have first suspected, though it's not out of the woods yet.

For one, the graphics are beautiful. I suspect that this may be a DSi exclusive game, because I've never seen graphics like that on the DS. The look and feel of the original game is all there, the Sumi-e painting come to life that gained such critical praise for Okami all those years ago. If nothing else, this will be a pretty game. Another thing to point out is the music. It seems that they'll be reusing the old soundtrack, which is wonderful because Okami has a brilliant soundtrack, but so far I haven't heard any new music used for the game. That is slightly disappointing, because, after all, this is supposed to be a new game, there should be some fesh tunes mixed in with the classics. Of course, development is far from finished, so it's not safe to assume that there won't be any new music used.

On the downside, It seems that Kuninushi will be following you around everywhere you go. (For those who never got the Okami artbook and aren't nerds like me, Kuninushi is the son of Kushi and Susano - the little kid that you can see riding on Ammy's chibi....terasu's...back in the game trailers. He never appeared in the first game though he was originally planned to, but you could see him towards the end of the end credits. They've changed his design slightly, but this is not important). One of the many great things about Okami was getting to play as a wolf. Not as a human with a wolf or a human that can transform into a wolf, but a wolf, pure and simple. It would ruin it to have a kid tagging along the whole time. Hopefully they don't make him the new Issun (That would absolutely break my heart) because the idea of a new Poncle friend for chibiterasu is too awesome not to hope for.

Things are looking up for Okamiden, but it's not time to celebrate just yet. This game  has a lot to live up to and a lot of odds stacked against it. If they can pull it off, well, a party is in order, I think.

So today, after months and months of putting up with the tantrums and malfunctions of our 10-year-old PS2, I decided it was time to go adopt a new baby. I became the proud owner of a beautiful, mint condition ceramic white PS2, and a voucher for a free game to boot. This greatly improved my mood considering I came down with a sore throat randomly in the middle of the day and was feeling pretty crappy.  So I brought it home and settled down to play some FFIX. I insert the disc, am absolutely thrilled to see the thing actually load the game without any trouble, go to load my file and...what's this? No file for FF9 found? That can't be! I had four games saved on there. I wonder if, perhaps, I somehow deleted my files removing the card from the console. Shit happens, yanno? It's slightly depressing, but truth be told It's been ages and ages since I played through this game from the beginning. I start a new game and I'm having a jolly old time, jumping rope with Vivi and attempting to locate mittens the kitten. Well, Moogles fall from the sky, ask me to save;  I save - You know,  you don't argue with Moogles, and promptly got punk'd. Cannot format memory card! Congratulations, loser!

It figures that my only ps1 memory card would fail me at the very moment I need it most. So now it's off to buy some new ones. Tomorrow.

A long time have I waited for this. And I had all but given up hope, stopped trying to place bugs in peoples ears, stopped dreaming and hoping and moved on. In the back of my mind, there was always that small hope that refuses to go away - and now, all those those months, well, they're moving on to years now - of hoping, silently, and at times, not so silently has payed off - kind of.

At first I was stunned. In disbelief. It took a few moments for the weight of it all to sink in, and then there was the initial joy of it - but what is it, truly?

To anyone who has loved this game like I have, who has completed every sidequest, unearthed every stray bead...felt the sheer joy of being a part of the Okami world....simply traveling from place to place in this game is fun in itself, the gorgeous world all around you and the endearing, inspiring character you control...that alone makes Okami a triumph, and when integrated with the creative fighting style, the unique and very wonderful characters, the best damn soundtrack a game has ever had...Okami is unforgettable, and to all those hoping for a sequel, not one of us were hoping for a NDS spin-off void of the original creators.

Chibiterasu? They obviously didn't try very hard with that one. Already the plot sounds like every bad fanfic I've ever read. But the screenshots do look very nice, and it is a relief that they're keeping to the original game style. But for a sequel to Okami, one would expect something more grandiose. My hope, here, is that this is only a cog in the machine - a final attempt to bring the world of Okami to the masses, the thousands who would love the game if only given the chance.

I hope that one day a true sequel will be made, with the original masterminds at the helm. For a REAL Okami sequel I'll buy a PS3 if I need to. I'll buy 100 copies of the new game, if that's what they want. I will no doubt play this game, for who knows, it could turn out awesome, but for now I am in a limbo of bliss and disappointed - after three years of waiting they finally throw us a bone, but it makes me wonder, when will they stop toying with this franchise and make an honest-to-God sequel? I for one, and tired of waiting.
